East Asian Center for Sinology, the University of Tokyo - Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation Overseas Center (CCK-EACS)
In 2026, the Foundation established its sixth overseas center, the “East Asian Center for Sinology,” at the University of Tokyo. By leveraging Japan’s unique academic positioning as a crossroads of Eastern and Western civilizations, the Center aims to blend Asian, European, and American scholarly traditions, fostering deep interaction and transformation between Sinology and Western academia. Professor Tsuyoshi Ishii, Director of the East Asian Academy for New Liberal Arts (EAA) at the University of Tokyo, serves as the Center’s director. Its core initiatives include hosting international academic conferences and workshops, publishing research findings, translating exceptional Sinological works, and funding young scholars to attend international conferences.
Recognizing the University of Tokyo’s profound tradition and academic vitality in Sinology, the Foundation envisions this Center as a strategic base to co-promote forward-looking, global Sinological research. Moving forward, the Center will actively connect with regional research institutions to advance East Asian Sinology and cultivate a global network of humanistic wisdom. Domestically, it will establish a collaborative research network with Waseda University, Keio University, and Kyoto University. Regionally, it will unite academic institutions across Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Macau, and Mainland China to drive cross-border exchange. Globally, it will forge ties with premier institutions in Europe, the Americas, and Oceania—such as New York University, the Australian National University, and the University of Bonn—to explore how Sinology can serve as a conceptual resource for responding to contemporary global shifts. Through these comprehensive efforts, the Foundation aims to support Asia-Pacific Sinology, provide superior resources for regional scholars, and foster closer international collaboration between the broader Asia-Pacific region and Taiwan.
