A GIS and Institutional Economic Study of the Cotton Textile Economy in the Songjiangfu (松江府) Region during the Eighteenth Century

Project Director:Billy Kee-Long So; Institution: The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong

This project studied the cotton textile industry of the Songjiangfu 松江府 region in the Lower Yangtze delta (Jiangnan 江南) during the eighteenth century. Its main goals were: 1) To create a GIS dataset of the Qing Songjiangfu Region; 2) To incorporate it with the Ming Songjiangfu GIS dataset and other historical GIS datasets at Academia Sinica; and, 3) To apply GIS spatial analytical methods in reinterpreting the cotton economy of the Lower Yangtze Delta and its performance during the late imperial era. This project’s results have enhanced our knowledge of spatial and institutional dimensions of the market economy and its cotton textile sector in the Songjiangfu Region in Ming and Qing times.
