Religion, Architecture, and the Economy in Southeast China

Project Director:John Lagerwey; Institution: École française d'Extrême-Orient, France

This research project represents the continuation of an earlier grant (RG013-U-93: The Structure and Dynamics of Chinese Rural Society). The purpose of these two projects was to conduct interdisciplinary and integrated research on village culture, economic development, and religious life in northern areas of Fujian and Jiangxi, as well as southern Zhejiang. Special attention was devoted to Hakka communities in the former two provinces. From 2002 to 2014, over two dozen monographs have been published, including the Traditional Hakka Studies Series (《客家傳統社會叢書》).
